I am pleased to announce Dr Owen Bradfield’s appointment as the inaugural Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at MIPS. The part-time CMO role will be an integral part of the executive leadership team. As MIPS is a mutual owned by its members, Owen, in his role, will provide clinical and strategic leadership in the delivery of our membership benefits including education, member advocacy, and risk management services.
Owen is a dual-qualified medical practitioner, health lawyer, and 2020 Fulbright Future Scholar. He has over 10 years’ experience in the medical indemnity industry, having advised and represented health practitioners in a range of medico-legal disputes, including civil claims, regulatory complaints, privacy disputes, Coronial inquests and Medicare investigations. Owen is passionate about advocating for fair regulatory and legal processes for healthcare practitioners and enjoys the challenge of supporting members who are navigating complex medico-legal problems.
Owen is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and combines his role at MIPS with academic research at the University of Melbourne that examines the intersection between legal claims and doctors’ health. An example of his recent research can be found here. Owen is also Chairperson of Victoria’s Patient Review Panel and a Member of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Ethics Committee. Owen has recently returned from four months as a Scholar in Residence at the Stanford University Department of Health Policy and will return to clinical practice later in the year.
Owen will be presenting to members over the next few months, and is looking forward to meeting and understanding for himself how MIPS can better support our members.
