NSW patient DOB on prescriptions and dispensing records

Reading time:

For the attention of NSW members

The Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Regulation 2008 (the Regulation) has been amended to require the inclusion of the patient’s date of birth (DOB) on all prescriptions that are issued or dispensed in NSW from 1 November 2022.

The requirement applies to all prescription formats:

  • Handwritten prescriptions
  • Computer generated prescriptions that are printed on paper
  • Computer generated (electronic transfer of prescription) prescriptions
  • Conformant electronic prescriptions  (an existing requirement).

Vendors of clinical practice software have been informed to enable the necessary system functionality to be implemented.

A pharmacist will be permitted to dispense a prescription if the DOB is omitted. The pharmacist must obtain the patient's DOB from the patient or their agent and record this in the dispensing system.
