MIPS is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Bronwyn King AO, to the role of Deputy Chair of the MIPS Board, effective 1 April 2024.
Bronwyn studied medicine at the University of Melbourne and has recently retired from clinical practice as a radiation oncologist, after a rewarding career in both the public and private sectors.
She is founder and CEO of Tobacco Free Portfolios, a global not-for-profit organisation that encourages financial institutions to embed tobacco exclusions into their sustainability frameworks. Bronwyn led the development of the Tobacco-Free Finance Pledge, a global initiative she launched in 2018, at the United Nations in New York, with the support of Australian Prime Minister Turnbull, French President Macron, World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, and multiple UN agencies. The Pledge now has more than 200 signatories with combined assets under management of over US$17 trillion. In 2021, MIPS became a proud signatory of the Pledge. Bronwyn’s 2017 TEDx Sydney talk, about her ‘accidental investment in tobacco companies’, has been viewed over three million times.
Bronwyn is a former elite swimmer who represented Australia (and won the Lorne Pier the Pub back in 1991!). For ten years Bronwyn worked as Team Doctor for the Australian Swimming Team, and she plans to spend late July glued to the TV as she cheers on the Aussie team in Paris!
She is currently working as a consultant with Burnet Institute, on the issue of air quality, and in 2023, was honoured to be made an Honorary Professor with the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health at University of Melbourne.
She recently served as a non-executive director of the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) - the insurer for the Victorian government and provider of medical indemnity insurance to Victoria’s public hospitals. She is currently on the board of Nicolab, a digital healthcare company striving to advance emergency stroke care.
Bronwyn has received numerous prestigious awards in recognition of her unique contribution to local and global health, including being appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to community health. She was the 2019 Melburnian of the Year, an award bestowed by the City of Melbourne. In 2022 she was honoured to receive the WHO Director-General Special award for global impact, on behalf of Tobacco Free Portfolios.
In her spare time, Bronwyn can be found trying (and mostly succeeding!) to clock up 10,000 steps each day, quietly enjoying a great cup of tea or dreaming of a perfect day on the ski slopes with her family.
